These murals are the work of David Seils, an Asheville, N.C.-based designer, artist and relief sculptor. He applies an overlay to the walls to create these intricate, one-of-a-kind pieces.

“In the past, artwork was tediously carved in marble or limestone to only a depth of a few inches to create the illusion of depth,” says his website. “With the advantage of new materials, the same effect can be accomplished by building up the relief sculpture instead of carving.”

On interior walls, Seils uses are white molding plaster, perlite and lime. Besdies beauty, the materials insulate, soundproof and protect against fire. On exterior walls he uses white cement, silicon sand and lime, which add strength.
