Cemstone Northfield plant is the Central Region winner in the 2021 National Ready Mix Concrete Association (NRMCA) Commitment to Environmental Excellence Awards competition. Through this awards competition, the NRMCA’s Safety, Environment, and Operations committee salutes companies that have not only met, but surpassed governmental compliance measures and demonstrated a commitment to environmental excellence through plant and staff investment.
The judges evaluated the plant on 10 separate criteria that demonstrated the company’s commitment to the environment through innovative management.
The Northfield plant commits itself to not only being an active member of the community, but to be a responsible steward of the land. The Northfield plant is heavily involved with Rice County Habitat for Humanity. Cemstone staff volunteered their time to help construct an energy-efficient home from insulated concrete forms (ICF’s). The plant has a weir water recycling system to collect truck washout water. They then recycle this water to clean truck drums and in the batching of fresh concrete.
Cemstone’s Environmental and Engineering Manager, Alex Olin, said “The Northfield plant strives to minimize its impact on the environment. Cemstone has taken huge steps to reduce the carbon footprint of both the Northfield plant and of the ready-mixed concrete the facility provides. The plant staff is committed to doing their part to make sure that this plant is an active member of the community and remains a great neighbor.”
This marks the 9th time since 2011, and 7th year in a row that NRMCA has recognized a Cemstone plant with this award.
