Ultra Durable Technologies (UDT) recently introduced revised and improved EPIC Water-Based Urethane formulas. These updates have been made with the primary goals of increasing raw material stability and removing APEO (alkylphenol ethoxylate) from the products. Several exciting improvements have been incorporated into these reformulations.
- LOWER VOC: Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) have been reduced to ensure compatibility with all <50 g/L requirements. EPIC Gloss = 46 g/L and EPIC Matte = 25 g/L.
- APEO-FREE: EPIC Gloss and Matte are now APEO-free! APEOs (alkylphenol ethoxylates) can degrade into alkylphenols (APs) in the environment. Some APs are very toxic to aquatic life, with long-lasting effects. Some APs are suspected of damaging human fertility and unborn children.
- IMPROVED LEVELING: The leveling process during application has improved. Distinction of Image (DOI) of EPIC Gloss is up from 35 to 50 which means higher clarity and perception of gloss.
- CONSISTENT GLOSS: Gloss readings are consistent at various thicknesses and throughout the potlife. EPIC Gloss = 90° and EPIC Matte = 10°.
- CONSISTENT VISCOSITY: Viscosity remains consistent throughout the potlife.
- CONSISTENT POTLIFE: The potlife of EPIC Matte now matches EPIC Gloss (4HR = 45 min, 8HR = 90 min).
- NEW LABELS: All EPIC components have new labels (see image above) which distinguish them from the previous formula. The new EPIC labels are also more consistent with UDT’s other product lines.
Additional noteworthy technical changes:
- Due to the optimized chemistry of these formulas, all new components are not cross-compatible with the old formula. (Do not mix the newly labeled EPIC with the old, solid-green labeled EPIC.)
- NEW EPIC Gloss and Matte versions each have unique Part A-1 components. Part A-1 for Gloss has more volume and is packaged in a larger bottle.
- The recommended water reduction amounts are the same for Gloss and Matte and are now listed with a range. For example, EPIC Contractor kits are reduced with 32-36 oz of water. (Be sure the amount used is consistent for each kit mixed for the same project.)
