ShapeCrete is a new collaborative innovation between Fu-Tung Cheng, master designer and founder of Cheng Concrete, and Sakrete. ShapeCrete is a high-performance, versatile concrete mix that can be shaped, sculpted, molded or cast to make concrete projects limited only by the imagination. ShapeCrete was demonstrated at World of Concree 2015. The product will be available in retail markets in April.
Using concrete as his primary medium, Cheng has pioneered architectural designs and forms for a variety of interior and exterior applications. Cheng and Sakrete teamed up with a mutual vision to inspire the maker community — everyone from concrete artisans and crafters, to artists and DIY homeowners — to change the way they think about and work with concrete.
The innovative result of their collaboration is ShapeCrete: an easy-to-use, just-add-water, shape-able concrete that can be poured, rolled, pushed or molded into an infinite array of custom concrete designs.
“I was excited to make concrete more approachable to a broader maker community, so we stayed focused on how fun and rewarding the process of working with concrete can be,” said Cheng, president of Cheng Concrete. “Sure, concrete responds to any form you pour it into, but we wanted to create a material that can do that AND respond to how you shape it with your hands, tooling or even found objects. You can go thick or go as thin as 1/8-inch and get professional results without professional equipment. With ShapeCrete, your prep and form time is cut way down, and your imagination and project success rate goes way up.”
“ShapeCrete embodies the continued dedication of two industry-leading brands to developing quality, creative products made readily available for experienced and novice crafters and professionals alike interested in playing with the endless possibilities of concrete,” said Eric Peterson, president – Sakrete of North America.
As a durable, professional-grade concrete product, ShapeCrete allows makers, crafters, DIYers and contractors to stretch the limits of their creative potential through concrete designs that require no oven-baking or kiln-firing. Since ShapeCrete is designed for simple workability in both thick and thin applications, users can simply add water, mix and sculpt the clay-like substance into limitless shapes or forms, such as custom planters, vases, bowls, address tiles, garden sculptures, furniture and more.
Additionally, ShapeCrete provides 30 to 60 minutes of working time and can be colored with concrete colors during mixing or painted once hardened after 24 hours. The end result is a durable concrete structure with a beautiful finish that can include a smooth or glass-like appearance, a refined texture or even detailed impressions of other objects.
ShapeCrete also doubles as a quick, easy-to-use material for small everyday concrete repairs such as patching and repair for driveways, patios and walkways.
The launch of ShapeCrete builds upon the companies’ established partnership in which Sakrete 5000-Plus bagged concrete has been the core product used with Cheng Countertop Pro-Formula and Outdoor Pro-Formula admixtures for more than a decade.
