Nawkaw Southeast was honored by the American Concrete Institute’s Georgia Chapter for participation on a high-rise concrete restoration project in downtown Atlanta. The firm submitted the project previously for the ACI Awards. They walked away with First Place in the Restoration Category. This year, Nawkaw Southeast submitted the project under the contracting company, with mention of Nawkaw’s concrete staining. It won first place again.
Exposed river-rock aggregate consolidated concrete walls made up the exterior surfaces of the high-rise building. After years of pollution buildup, the building’s bare spots began to contrast unevenly and unattractively with the concrete surface.
Maintaining the character of the original building, Nawkaw Southeast presented a solution that included a stain wash to imitate the river rock using the company’s proprietary NWRT- 91 product. Not only did the river rock become more vibrant with cleaning and staining, but areas that were void of rock now appear abundant with the aggregate. The company designed templates to replicate the river rock pattern in concrete. This process involved strict matching of both scale and texture to the existing river rock. Nawkaw stained almost 70,000 square feet of consolidated concrete surfaces, and the project took 6 months to complete.
