In the upcoming weeks, the Abu Dhabi National Paper Mill is set to go online with one of the most advanced paper production systems in the world. The yearlong facility expansion project counted on Penetron crystalline technology to protect the plant structure against groundwater intrusion.
The Abu Dhabi National Paper Mill (ADNPM) in Mussafah, United Arab Emirates, is one of the largest and most technically advanced producers of jumbo tissue paper rolls in the Middle East. This paper type is used to make table napkins, kitchen and hand towels, and facial and toilet tissues in white and a range of other colors.
Spread over 60,000 square meters, the ADNPM plant includes manufacturing and storage areas, an effluent treatment plant, administration offices and parking. The production systems churn out world-class tissue paper and the facility can also convert waste paper into high quality commercial tissue fiber. The ADNPM produces more than 65,000 tons of tissue paper every year.
The expansion of the facility added a New Tissue Technology (NTT) production system, only the second plant in the world to utilize this new technology. The new line will start up full production by mid-2015. The expansion project also comprises a new floor above the adjacent ADNPM headquarters.
The new building features a 6 meter-deep basement, which is five meters below the site’s sea water level. This made waterproofing of the basement concrete structures the main challenge of the expansion project.
“The contractor wanted to be absolutely sure any below-grade structure would be impervious to groundwater issues,” adds Jozef Van Beeck, Director, International Sales & Marketing of The Penetron Group.
Penetron Admix was tested and chosen as the preferred concrete protection solution for over 4,600 cubic meters of concrete (the slab and retaining walls of the new production line facility). All construction joints were sealed with Penebar SW-45 waterstops (?420 m). Further, Penetron, Penecrete Mortar and Peneplug were employed to take care of any leaks in the foundation piles.
“Using the complete line of Penetron technology for this project turned out to be a comprehensive and optimal solution,” adds Mr. Van Beeck. “This phase of the construction was completed on time and on budget.”
