PPG Industries’ (NYSE:PPG) protective and marine coatings (PMC) business announced it is supplying as much as 700 gallons of paint to refurbish the Coney Island Cyclone roller coaster at Luna Park, which is regarded as one of the world’s most famous amusement park rides.
Through Baynum Painting, a Newport, Kentucky-based painting contractor, PPG will provide Amercoat 370 epoxy primer and PSX One acrylic-siloxane topcoat for the roller coaster’s structural steel components, and Seal Grip primer along with Pitt-Tech Plus topcoat for its wood surfaces.
A fast-drying, two-coat epoxy product, Amercoat 370 primer is engineered to perform in a wide range of atmospheric conditions. PSX One coating is a single-component, isocyanate-free product that provides the performance, color and finish quality of a high-durability urethane with easy single-coat application.
Seal Grip primer blocks stains and demonstrates excellent adhesion on a variety of surfaces, including wood, concrete block, masonry and brick. Pitt-Tech Plus coating is a 100-percent waterborne acrylic enamel that can be applied directly to metal and other primed surfaces.
As topcoats, the PSX One and Pitt-Tech Plus products deliver long-term color and gloss retention as well as excellent resistance to weathering, salt spray and other challenging environmental hazards.
Diane Kappas, PPG vice president, protective and marine coatings, Americas, said PPG is honored to contribute to the legacy of the legendary Cyclone roller coaster, which is being restored to its classic glossy white finish over a 12-week period ending in mid-November. “Our products are commonly used to protect bridges, water storage tanks, naval ships, cargo vessels and other critical parts of the world’s safety and transportation infrastructure, so we consider it a privilege when we can help preserve and maintain historic assets such as this celebrated American landmark,” she explained.
Opened in June 1927, the Cyclone roller coaster has thrilled generations of riders with its signature 60-miles-per-hour, 85-foot, 60-degree plunge. Listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, the attraction at Luna Park also is designated an official New York City landmark and recorded in the New York State Register of Historic Places.
PPG’s PMC business is a world leader in protective and marine coatings. Its products protect customers’ assets in some of the world’s most demanding conditions and environments, such as projects in energy, infrastructure and marine markets.
