If you attended the 2012 Concrete Decor Show in San Antonio, Texas, you might remember this colorful scene at the SS Specialties booth near the main entrance. That intriguing disk is an Aztec calendar colored with SS products. Coyne Edmison, general manager of The Stamp Store, a retailer affiliated with SS, sent us the rest of the story.
“Tim Fraizer, director of training for SS Specialties, wanted to have a little fun while demonstrating the versatility of some of the SS Specialties products. Tim came up with an idea of a wall hanging utilizing the Aztec Calendar stamp manufactured by Proline Concrete Tools.
“Tim’s first step was to cut a piece of MDF board the size of the stamp. To the circular-cut MDF board, Tim applied a base coat of SS-Stamp mix, followed by the stamp coat to a thickness of approximately 3/8 inch. He then applied SS-Liquid Release to the stamp and carefully stamped the surface of the circle. After the stamp was removed, the calendar was covered with 1-mil plastic sheeting to prevent premature drying, and the medallion cured overnight.
“The next day Tim utilized the management techniques of Tom Sawyer when he convinced most of the staff of The Stamp Store how much fun it would be to color the intricate medallion. Under Tim’s direction the calendar was colored using SS Rainbow, a water borne epoxy-acrylic coloring method. The SS Rainbow system may be used to color interior and exterior concrete and is often used to correct acid stain color problems and for antiquing stamped work. After the painting party had finished the calendar, two coats of SS Supreme 2500 sealer were applied.
“When Tim was asked why he selected the intricate Aztec Calendar to stamp he replied, ‘It is never too late for decorative concrete.’”
